songs in the key of Skinned

  • Jul. 6th, 2009 at 1:58 PM

In anticipation of the release of the Skinned paperback (30 days away!) and the sequel, Crashed (63 days away!), I'm working on updating my website. If all goes well, this will include a playlist of the songs that got me through writing Crashed.  Now, as I think I've mentioned around here before, I'm not known for having particularly good taste in music. You're talking to a girl whose first cassette tape was New Kids on the Block, which was maybe excusable because I was about 11, but far less excusable is my first CD when I was 14 and thus old enough to know better: The Sign, by those musical maestros, Ace of Base.

(You know, I was going to just link to this video, but I'm sorry, I can't resist.)

Anyway, the point is, I'm not sure anyone will want to see my Crashed playlist, or that it's a wise thing to make it available for public consumption, but putting it together has reminded me of something I've been meaning to post here for an incredibly long time. A few months ago, very awesome reader McKenzie B -- who, unlike me, has incredible taste in music -- decided to put together a playlist for Skinned.

And it is, like her, very awesome.  Enjoy:

"All Dead, All Dead," Queen
"Golden," Fall Out Boy
"Everything We Had," The Academy Is
"Somebody Hates Me," Reel Big Fish
"Backstabber," Dresden Dolls
"There's a Good Reason These Tables are Numbered," Panic at the Disco
"We Both Go Down Together," Decemberists (this was a particularly excellent choice, since it's actually on the real playlist, ie songs I listened to while I was writing the book)
"The Ghost of You," My Chemical Romance
"One Day, Robots Will Cry," Cobra Starship
"Coppertone," The Academy Is

And, because in addition to being awesome, McKenzie is brilliant, here's where you can listen to the whole thing yourself.

Hey, Ace of Base is close to my 90s-child-though-and-through heart. ;) So you have no objections from me there! My first casette was The Lion King soundtrack, and my first CD was the soundtrack for the second Pokemon movie. So I think you have me beat a bit in this case.

I'm terrible with making playlists to books. Usually it just ends up being whatever I listened to at the time of reading (which is why I associate "Run Around" from the Digimon movie with The Other Place by Monica Hughes). I'd love to see your playlist for Crashed, because in my mind if it's what the author listened to while writing, it's worth a try to see if it enhances the story.

Ouch -- soundtrack to the Pokemon movie? Okay, you definitely win. Although no shame in the Lion King soundtrack. (I always wanted the Aladdin soundtrack, but wasn't allowed to buy it, as my father thought that at age 14 I was too old for such things. Joke's on him, I guess, given my current professional condition of arrested development!)

I agree with tehsongsong, about the author's music enhancing the reading. I like McKenzie's list! Its awesome! :D
(I'm soooo excited for Crashed)

I'll definitely be posting my playlist soon -- but you can bet I'll be listening to McKenzie's list as I work on book 3!

I have songs by Josie and the Pussycats (yes, the movie soundtrack) on the playlists for some of my books, so unless yours for Crashed can top that in embarrassment, I doubt you have much to fear. :P

Also...Ace of Base is cool! (Then again, I don't seem to have the best music taste either, heh.)

There is NOTHING embarrassing about Josie and the Pussycats. Except maybe if you wear cat ears while you're listening to them. (And maybe not even then, depending on the ears.)

I am so excited for crashed. And I think it is interesting hearing what music Authors listen to. I personally don't even know what constitutes good taste in music, I just know mine is pretty bad.
